Bring Back Kirra Petition

This petition draws to the attention of the Houses the loss of high quality surfing conditions at Kirra Point and the poor environmental condition of Kirra reef, which has resulted from the mismanagement of the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project. We the undersigned call on the Government to intervene and work more closely with all project partners and the local community to help improve surf quality at the famed Kirra point, maintain coastal security and restore the reef at Kirra.

Your petitioners therefore request the Federal Government to:

  1. Ensure that the deposition areas for sand that is dredged out of the Tweed River bar be extended to include areas further to the west and the north.
  2. Support the investigation, construction and ongoing operation of a supplementary outlet for the sand bypassing system further to the west. A new outlet would not only help to restore the existing surfbreaks and better manage sand distribution, but it would also create a new surfbreak in the vicinity of the outlet site.
  3. Investigate the function of the Kirra Point Groyne on surf quality, including the value of modifying the groyne to improve surf quality.
  4. Provide funding for further research and investment in infrastructure works as described above, which will lead to improved management of the system, improved recreational amenity and the restoration of Kirra reef.
